About the Ironbound
The Ironbound of today symbolizes the industrial might and creativity of Newark's eastern sector, a colorful area known far and wide as the Ironbound District. Characterized by it Portuguese and Latino flavor, the district's success emerged through the sweat of its residents and their devotion to the manufacturing trades.
The Ironbound neighborhood is also characterized by its unique mingling of residential housing and industrial concerns. Many tree-lined streets combine European-style housing on one side, while manufacturing plants operate on the other.
Hard-working residents maintain an old-fashioned work ethic harmonized by family values and comfortable cohabitation with business and industry.
That heterogeneity of business, industry, and community likewise favors the Ironbound business association, which celebrates 85 years of operation in 2003.
Just as commerce within the district has spread to the greater metropolitan area, so too has the membership of the Ironbound. Today, we are truly a regional organization of small businesses whose members contribute diverse interests in finance, technological development, transportation, international trade, education, health care, and, of course, manufacturing.
Networking
Nobody does networking like Ironbound! We don't believe in anonymous business-card exchanges. Instead, each session involves a friendly intro of every participant so that afterward, we can knowingly approach those who share common business interests.
Also, we publicly offer business leads and express thanks for business acquired through the organization.
Ours is a sincere, caring approach to networking, and newcomers are always impressed. Of course it works best for those who establish rapport by returning time and again.
Community Outreach
This year, Ironbound is making a new commitment to community outreach, particularly through sponsorship of a Junior Achievement program at East Side High School in Newark. The program will teach basic business communication skills and business law to East Side students, giving them an opportunity to question professionals about various careers. We also plan to sponsor a career night at the school.
Another youth initiative for 2000 is our pledged support of the Rome Street Athletic Center in Newark's Ironbound section. Closed for 20 years due to lack of funding, the newlly reopened center needs money to fund its athletic programs. This year, Ironbound will sponsor a fund-raising event.
Ironbound Golf Outing
It's a sell-out crowd every year with 18 holes of golf, a great cocktail party and delicious buffet, and always at a premier country club. Through it all, the undercurrent is professional networking. Ironbound members know how to have fun and do business on the links.
Holiday Gala
Where else can you schmooze with local and regional politicians, while also enjoying the company of your spouse, friends and business associates. Ironbound's Holiday Gala combines a casual political element with a festive atmosphere, a panoramic view of northern New Jersey, a grand buffet, and top-shelf open bar.
People who do business in Newark have a direct opportunity to talk with the mayor, council members, police officials, and judges, not to mention state legislators, and sometimes even federal politicians.
Dinner Cruise
Summertime and the livin's easy! You and your clients will love our annual dinner cruise held on the private yacht "Royal Princess". Enjoy a night-time cruise of New York Harbor, delicious food, open bar, and dancing across the Hudson. It is a true highlight of everyone's year, and unabashedly social.
